NEW TRENDS IN SKIN CANCER PREVENTION
UVA is long-wavelength, low energy radiation that does not just damage surface cells (as UVB does) but instead goes deep, to where melanocytes (cells that produce skin-protecting melanin) live. When melanocytes are damaged by UVA rays, they not only produce a weaker umbrella of melanin but can also replicate and cause melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Since collagen and elastin (they give your skin its' tone and elasticity) reside in the deeper dermis layer as well, UVA affects the skin's appearance, according to New York University's Dermatology department.
